Photo Assignment 3

"Take three photos showing deep space. In at least one photo you must demonstrate the depth cues of 1) perspective (convergence of line), 2) size difference, 3) textural diffusion or overlap or tonal separation. Each of these cues can be used as many times as you want, but must each be used at least once."

Photo #1

I decided to up the stakes for this series of pictures by limiting myself to one lens, a super-wide 14mm, and shooting in just one location: an old parking garage. This first picture deals with size difference. The chair in the foreground wasn't that much closer to the camera than the ones in the back, and yet because of the wide focal length, the background quickly falls away. Also, I shifted my color temp to very warm, and I like the conflict of the imposing-looking shapes of the distorted chairs mixed with this golden-hour comforting warmth.

Parking garages are great for leading lines. I thought it was interesting that due to the wide angle, I was able to have the cars be both my foreground and mid ground. I would have liked a subject standing there in the empty parking spot, giving an ominous feeling to him...but you can imagine...

Honestly, I don't feel this one quite worked. I think I was just trying to be a cool artsy photographer and forgot to find a clear motivation for this image. However, I did shoot this with the assignment in mind, and was trying to provide an example of tonal separation. Not sure I was entirely successful, but the overhang was dark, there was more light on the stairs, and then the sky was again darker than it should have been.

Photo 1. Wow. I'm getting a lot of Bond vibes, and I love the yellow light flooding in and spilling over the parking garage. The low angle helps to portray it in a sort of majestic way, and the size difference of the chairs as well as 1 point perspective that the lines of the ceiling give you help to create great deep space.

Photo 2. I think black and white was a good choice, and it looks like you shot fairly wide here as well, which helps. The other thing is you held the camera pretty high, so being right next to the leading lines helps them look very far apart, and come closer much more dramatically. I do…

I think you did a really good job at creating the illusion of deep space in all of your photos, even if you didn't get what you were going for. I think the use of size difference paired with the leading lines on the ceiling really helps make the room seem deeper than you mentioned. The cars and strong lines on the ceiling in the second photo is a super effective and interesting example of utilizing a single vanishing point. Even though you were going for tonal separation, I think the last photo is a really great example of textural diffusion. You're photos are always so good!
