Photo Assignment 1

"Shoot three purposeful images this week. The photos should each be the opening image to a non-existent film. Try to make these opening images meet Kubrick's expectation for a 'non-submersible moment.' He said that it should be the most interesting thing an audience has seen that day."

For this first picture, I wanted to mess with lines and light to create an ominous look. Keeping the foreground actor in darkness, while letting some light play off of the weapon, I was hoping the audience's eye would go between the assumed victims and the knife. I think overall I was successful.

Right off the bat, I’m going to say I wasn’t entirely successful on this one. I didn’t want Jonathan to be looking at the camera. I also could have had him looking at the camera for a more comedic and confrontational shot, and thus should have framed him in the center and straight on. The net in the foreground is too blurry as well, despite stopping down from a 4 to a 8. I think the biggest underlying issue was my lack of vision. Still, hopefully a little interesting despite my shortcomings.

I wanted at least one of these shots to be more of a portrait, so that as the movie opened, you could see the expression of the main character and instantly wonder “What is this person’s story?” I loved this image of this Thai kid eating in the back of a food truck, and I had to take the shot. Had to take several until I had one with the expression I wanted. I think it worked pretty well.

Wow! All of your photos are super amazing and I like that there all communicate a different emotion. For each image I could clearly visualize a film and what story each film would entail.
